The right to informed consent
Before any aesthetic procedure, your doctor must explain:
- What the procedure involves — the steps, the technique, what you will feel, how long it takes
- The risks — both common side effects and rare but serious complications
- The expected outcome — realistic results, not best-case-only promises
- Alternatives — other treatment options, including the option of doing nothing
- Recovery — downtime, aftercare requirements, and when to expect final results
- Being rushed through a form while the nurse prepares the treatment room
- A verbal "Are you ready?" without explanation
- Consent given under pressure ("The price goes up tomorrow")
- Signing a form you haven't had time to read
The right to know who is treating you
The right to transparent pricing
| What you should receive | What should concern you |
|---|---|
| Written quote before treatment | 'We'll discuss pricing after the assessment' |
| Itemized breakdown (procedure, product, extras) | Single lump sum with no breakdown |
| Total cost confirmed before you agree | Price changes mid-treatment |
| Clear cancellation/refund policy | 'No refunds under any circumstances' |
| No hidden charges | Surprise 'consultation fee' or 'aftercare charges' |
The right to genuine products
For any injectable treatment (Botox, fillers, threads, PRP), you have the right to see:
- Sealed packaging opened in front of you
- Visible brand name (Allergan, Galderma, Merz, etc.)
- Batch number and expiry date
- Holographic security seal or QR verification code
You are not being difficult by asking. You are being responsible. A legitimate clinic will welcome the request.
The right to complain
If something goes wrong, you have formal channels:
What to document if something goes wrong
- Photos of the treatment area and any visible issues
- All receipts and payment records
- WhatsApp messages or emails with the clinic
- The signed consent form (request a copy)
- Names of all staff you interacted with
The right to walk away
If a clinic refuses to refund a pre-consultation deposit after you decide not to proceed, this may be grounds for a complaint to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. Read the red flags guide to recognise pressure tactics earlier.
Frequently asked
What rights do I have as an aesthetic patient in Malaysia?+
In Malaysia, aesthetic patients have the right to informed consent, to know who is treating them and verify their qualifications, to receive transparent pricing before treatment, to see genuine product packaging, to file complaints with MMC or MOH if something goes wrong, and to walk away from any consultation without pressure.
Can I walk away from an aesthetic consultation in Malaysia?+
Yes. You can leave any consultation at any point before treatment begins. No deposit, pre-payment, or verbal commitment overrides your right to change your mind. A clinic that makes you feel trapped or pressured is violating patient care standards.
How do I complain about an aesthetic clinic in Malaysia?+
File a complaint with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) for doctor misconduct or with the Ministry of Health (MOH) for clinic operational issues. Document everything including photos, receipts, messages, and consent forms. Eligible BookAClinic bookings are also protected up to RM10,000 if a verified clinic standard is breached. See /booking-protection.
