HIFU Side Effects: What to Record and When to Contact the Clinic
Some redness, swelling and tenderness after HIFU is commonly reported. Anything worsening, severe, blistering, or new numbness or weakness needs a clinician, not a wait-and-see.

Key points
- Sudden new drooping or weakness on one side of the face, or trouble smiling, especially with speech problems or arm weakness: get emergency medical care where you are now. Do not wait to contact the clinic first.
- Severe or quickly worsening pain, swelling or blistering: get urgent medical care where you are now.
- New local numbness or tingling, a burn, blister, lump or anything else unexpected, without sudden facial drooping or weakness or other emergency signs: contact the treating clinic promptly for an assessment.
- Mild redness, swelling and tenderness that are settling are commonly reported, but if they are getting worse, do not wait it out.
- BookAClinic cannot assess symptoms or give emergency advice.
If something feels wrong: what to do now
BookAClinic is not an emergency or triage service and cannot tell you whether a symptom is serious. If in doubt, contact a doctor.
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sudden new drooping or weakness on one side of the face, or trouble smiling, especially with slurred or confused speech or weakness or numbness in an arm | Call your local emergency number immediately. Do not drive yourself, do not wait to contact the clinic, and do not assume the treatment is the cause. These can be signs of a stroke. |
| Severe or rapidly worsening pain or swelling, blistering over a large area, or feeling unwell | Get urgent medical care where you are now (emergency department or urgent doctor). Bring your treatment details. |
| A burn, blister, raised welts or lumps, new numbness or tingling, or anything else you were not told to expect | Contact the treating clinic promptly and ask to be assessed by a doctor. If you cannot reach them, see another doctor. |
| Mild redness, swelling or tenderness that is improving | Follow the clinic's written aftercare. If it stops improving or gets worse, contact the clinic; do not wait for a set number of days. |

What was reported for studied devices
For Ultherapy, the US instructions list effects seen in trials such as redness, swelling, welts, bruising and discomfort, and temporary numbness or muscle weakness from nerve inflammation. They also warn that burns, which may scar, are possible. They describe that system in the US only.
A 2024 review of adverse events with microfocused ultrasound with visualisation (MFU-V) found 19 reported adverse events among 506 patients in the published articles it included. It also looked at the US FDA's MAUDE database of voluntary reports, where most reports could not be verified. These figures describe those studies and that device type; they are not your personal risk and not a rate for every HIFU machine.
A 2024 MFU-V review and meta-analysis also described redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness as the common events in its included studies.
What to send the clinic
- Your name, treatment date and the areas treated.
- The device and model, and the shot or line count, if you have them.
- What the symptom is, when it started and whether it is getting better or worse.
- Clear photos in good light, with the date, taken the same way each time.
- The name of the practitioner who treated you and the clinic's after-hours contact.
Checks for the future
Before booking any HIFU, ask who will treat you, which device and model is used, and whom to contact after hours. In Malaysia you can check the device on the Medical Device Authority register and the practitioner through the Ministry of Health's aesthetic-practice pathways. These checks do not guarantee safety or a result.

Frequently asked questions
Is redness and swelling after HIFU normal?
Mild redness, swelling and tenderness are commonly reported for studied devices, and ask your clinic what to expect for yours. If they get worse instead of better, contact the clinic.
How long should I wait before calling the clinic?
There is no set waiting time. Contact the clinic as soon as something is worsening, severe or unexpected, and get urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
I have numbness or weakness in my face after HIFU. What should I do?
If facial drooping or weakness comes on suddenly, or you have trouble smiling, speaking or lifting an arm, get emergency medical care now; do not wait for the clinic and do not assume HIFU is the cause. For other new numbness, contact the treating clinic promptly for a doctor's assessment, and see a doctor urgently if it is getting worse or you cannot reach them.
Can BookAClinic tell me if my symptom is serious?
No. BookAClinic cannot assess symptoms. Contact the treating clinic or another doctor, or get urgent care if symptoms are severe.
